History
The Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence was founded in 1992 as The Grant Center to serve as a resource to the nonprofit community by providing information, training and consultation on securing national grants. Over the past eighteen years, the Alliance has helped Mid-South nonprofits raise more than $221 million in national funding. For every dollar that is locally donated to the Alliance, an average of $30 in national funding is generated for the community.
Over time, the funding landscape changed dramatically with nonprofits competing for fewer available dollars and increasing scrutiny from grant makers and the public. In response, the Alliance expanded its services to provide assistance in building high performing organizations that are good stewards of the resources they receive. The Alliance’s programming now includes the 501(c)ollege, management consulting, the Program for Nonprofit Excellence (the Alliance’s three-year capacity building initiative), research and advocacy, and the Grant Center, to achieve its mission of strengthening organizations that meet community needs.
We are supported by a diverse funding base that includes membership, consulting and training revenues, private donations, and grants from local foundations and corporations.
Alliance membership includes more than 200 nonprofits from Shelby County and the surrounding areas of West Tennessee, East Arkansas and North Mississippi. Members range from small volunteer organizations to large agencies with hundreds of staff and multi-million dollar budgets.
